EVOCATIVE OBJECTS
Summer course in 3D printing
Eyebeam, the not-for-profit organization dedicated to art and
technology, will offer it's second course in 3D printing every Tuesday
and Thursday from 6:00 to 8:30pm. The course will consist of twelve
sessions starting June 25th - August 1st 2002. The course will be held
in Eyebeam's space in Chelsea NYC located at 540 West 21st Street,
between 10th and 11th Aves. The cost of the course is $650.00 plus build
material. The average cost for build material is $20 a print.
Although traditionally only available to scientists and engineers, 3D
scanners and printers are becoming increasingly important for designers
and artists. In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to
digitally capture real world objects, transform these objects using a
CAD program, and then print finished pieces in 3D. In addition to hands
on projects, this small workshop will provide a venue for students to
discuss critical issues with other artists and designers. Distinguished
visitors from the Museum of Modern Art, The International Design
Magazine, Icon-Nicholson, and the MIT Media Lab will provide critiques
and contribute to the on-going discussion of the role of digital media
in artistic practice. The objects created by each student will gain wide
exposure and will be displayed in an upcoming exhibition at Eyebeam's
West 21st Street gallery.
Course instructor Andrew Davies is an experienced designer and teacher
with a background in sculpture, architecture, 3D modeling, and
interactive design.
